
PlaceTech Trend Talk Dublin: Summary, slides + gallery
The quarterly PlaceTech Trend Talk series took us to Dublin, where we welcomed property and tech players to explore the latest trends and issues within property’s transformation.
Guests included professionals from JLL, Sherry Fitzgerald, Forge, Avison Young, BNP Paribas, Equiem, Hollis, Lafferty Architects, IPUT, Owen Reilly, Construction Network Ireland, Green REIT and more.
PlaceTech Trend Talk Dublin was organised in association with Node, Mills & Reeve, Bruntwood Works, PropTech Ireland and FUTURE:PropTech.

Presentations
Michael Guerin, programme manager for Smart Docklands, took to the stage to introduce Dublin’s smart city testbed, an initiative by the four local authorities of Dublin. The project has engaged with communities from infrastructure to hospitality and developers, and as a result identified 300 problems within the area to be tackled. Watch Michael’s presentation
Michael Purcell, senior property management surveyor at JLL, shared how the Ireland team of the property giant is incorporating new processes into its day-to-day, how despite not being techy he’s now using multiple platforms showing how accessible tech is becoming and the firm’s work with tenant experience platform Equiem. Simon Whelan, chief operating officer at FenestraPro, shared how to achieve energy performance without compromising aesthetics and how architects can design buildings better and understanding design implications at an early stage. Watch Simon’s presentation
Vishal Shah, investment associate at U+I, talked about the developer’s experience partnering with tech companies, his role as a translator after working for proptech unicorn VTS, creating proof of concepts and the factors the firm is looking for in a partner with a focus on leadership. Karen Muldowney, business development manager at Sharpooji Pallonji, showed how the firm’s modern method of construction enables high rise buildings to be built on ground level and how the how it’s investing a large amount of money into R&D. Watch Karen’s presentation
Lauren Poon, head of digital at CallisonRTKL, shared how there needs to be a shift in mindset within the industry from focusing on the answers to what are the questions being asked. She also shared how the role of the architect is changing, with the Callison team using generative design and using VR to see what catches people’s eye and what doesn’t in a plan. Panels
Michael Purcell of JLL, Michael Guerin of Smart Docklands and Simon Whelan of FenestraPro returned to stage for a panel and was joined by Carol Tallon of PropTech Ireland. They discussed how to sort through the deluge of data, internal management and adopting new tools.
Vishal Shah of U+I, Karen Muldowney of Sharpooji Pallonji, Lauren Poon of CallisonRTKL, Joanne Geary of Sherry Fitzgerald and Doug Ward of Node, discussed hiring software engineers and retraining employees, pain points they’re trying to solve and communicating with boards over introduction of tech.
