Christmas smart home gift guide

I’m dreaming of a smart Christmas… Reading about proptech certainly has us wanting all of the gadgets, so we’ve put together a gift list that you can share with those friends and family who have no idea what to buy you, let them help bring tech into your home and make it smarter.

Voice control assistants

Amazon has sold millions of its Alexa devices, so join the crowd and ask someone for an Echo Dot this Christmas. £49.99 Curry’s

The rival to the dot is the Google Home Mini, which is very similar in look and feel, with just a 99p difference in price it’s down to you which company you want listening in on your every conversation. £49 John Lewis

If somebody really wants to treat you (or you want to treat yourself), there’s the big sisters of the two the Amazon Echo Plus (£139.99 Amazon) and Google Home (£129.99 Google).

Voice Assistants

Clockwise: Amazon’s Echo Dot, Google’s Home Mini, Google Home, Echo Plus

Smart lighting

You’ve left your home, you’re already 20 mins into your commute to work and you’ve just realised that you think you left the bathroom light on. How do you check? With Philips Hue you can control your lights remotely through an app wherever you are. The lights can also act as an alarm clock, mimicking the effect of a sunrise and allowing you to wake up naturally; or make it seem like you’re home when you’re not; create different ambiences and more. £169.99 for the starter kit on Philips

Philips Hue

See who’s at your door, even if you’re not at home, with the Nest Hello video doorbell. With motion detection, 24/7 streaming, and HD video, you can see if somebody is dropping off a parcel or be alerted if there’s a stranger lurking where they shouldn’t be.  £229 on John Lewis

Nest Doorbell 3

Nest doesn’t stop with a doorbell, the company is also known for its learning thermostat. The thermostat automatically adapts as your life changes, use it for a week and it then programs itself. From £219 on NestNest

Fancy putting some sensors into your home? Ecobee’s voice enabled smart thermostat comes with one. The room sensor helps manage hot or cold spots in your home and you can ask the thermostat to adjust the temperature. From $249 (£198) on Ecobee

Life can sometimes be a little too hectic, and house chores often get left behind. Meet Roomba by iRobot, a robot that vacuums your home whilst you put your feet up, or work late. The robot uses smart navigation and automatically cleans, adjusting the brush height so that it’s suitable for different floors. Make sure to also check out the company’s mopping robots called Braava. From £249.99 on iRobot
