PlaceTech Trend Talk London: Summary, slides + gallery
The quarterly PlaceTech Trend Talk series took us to London, where we welcomed over 100 property and tech players to explore the latest trends and issues within property’s transformation.

Presentations
Patrick Brown, head of insights and EU engagement at BPF, took to the stage to give an update on what BPF has been doing since our last Trend Talk London, including lobbying for a UK digital property forum and better use of data in the industry. Watch Patrick’s presentation
Phil Langley, head of creative tech at Bryden Wood, shared the innovations the cool firm is working on in architecture and automated design, including a design app for modular housing backed by the Major of London. Watch Phil’s presentation
Barry Jessup, director of First Base, shared his experience as a developer trying to implement tech into every process, one being the use of Built-ID for public consultation and the other District, for community engagement. Watch Barry’s presentation
Luke Allen, managing director of eviFile, explained how the digital evidence platform is modernising the construction industry and shared a case study with John F Hunt Group. Watch Luke’s presentation
Julian Barker, head of smart places at British Land, talked about the developer’s role in digital placemaking and retaining talent, creating community, and driving focus on sustainability. Watch Julian’s presentation
John Wills, associate director of Savills, shared his experience of joining the industry from the tech side, treating property as a product, using a ‘design thinking’ approach, hiring for roles that didn’t previously exist and the process of implementation in a large machine. Ritu Jain, cofounder and chief operating offer of co-living operator LifeX, shared how the new form of living is growing and becoming its own sector, and how tech is at the centre of firm with automated systems for finding homes and more. Watch Ritu’s presentation
Panels
Barry Jessup of First Base, Luke Allen of eviFile and Phil Langley of Bryden Wood returned to stage for a panel and were joined by Jo Davies of Mills & Reeve. They discussed how more needs to be done in property and construction when it comes to sustainability, upskilling staff, the belief change in the industry won’t come from the inside and challenging the approach to risk.
Julian Barker, head of smart places at British Land, John Wills, associate director of Savills, Ritu Jain, cofounder and chief operating offer of LifeX, and Robert Stark, senior executive director at MAPP, discussed translating data into useful information, internal change management and responding to the skills shortage.
