Uber’s Gray joins Voyage

Uber’s former director of engineering, Drew Gray, has been appointed CTO of US autonomous vehicle (AV) manufacturer, Voyage.

Gray will occupy the role from this month, after 2 years leading the deep learning team at Uber. Gray has also worked in an AV engineering roles with Tesla, Cruise and Otto, and was director of Hyundai’s Centre of Excellence from 2012-2013.

Gray commented: ““After leading six different teams in the AV industry, I have learned a ton of lessons. Most important is knowing what not to do. With Voyage’s incredibly smart, focused and collaborative team, a unique go-to-market, and a thriving ecosystem of startups providing core robotics and machine learning infrastructure, we can move fast and safe on our road to driverless. We are delivering one of the very first real applications of autonomous technology, and I’m really excited to be part of it.”

Voyage’s CEO Oliver Cameron and Drew Gray first met through online education organisation Udacity’s self-driving car engineering nanodegree, where Cameron was head of curriculum and Gray was a guest lecturer.

Cameron said: “One of the reasons I love working in autonomous vehicles is the opportunity to work with some of the smartest engineers and technical thought leaders on the planet. It was a ton of fun working with Drew back in 2016, and I can’t wait to continue learning from Drew in his new role as CTO.”

So far 2018 has been a big year for Voyage. In January the company announced its ‘Level Four’ fully autonomous vehicles will be the taxi fleet covering The Village retirement city in Florida, serving 125,000 people. In June, Voyage revealed its second generation G2 AVs, in a partnership with Enterprise rentals.

Voyage is currently hiring for a range of roles based in San Francisco, including mechatronics and deep learning engineers.
