Tesco to develop cashierless stores

In a race to compete with Amazon’s retail domination, British grocery chain Tesco has reportedly partnered with an Israeli startup, Trigo Vision, to develop cashierless stores.

Launched in January 2018, Amazon Go has opened 11 automated stores across the US in New York, Seattle, Chicago, and San Francisco, with plans to open 3000 by 2021.

Trigo Vision installs a network of cameras in stores and uses an Artificial Intelligence system to monitor product purchases, allowing shoppers to enter and leave without having to queue up to pay.

Founded in 2017 by brothers Daniel and Michael Gabay, the startup has raised $7m so far with leading investors, Hetz Ventures and Vertex Ventures.

Israel’s largest supermarket, Shufersal, partnered with Trigo Vision in November 2018 to pilot the technology in one of its stores for a year, before rolling out across the chain’s 272 locations.
