Ian Steel, Atkinsons Coffee

Insights into the world of coffee from Ian Steel (’Keeper of the Flame’ – green-bean buyer, roaster, marketing MD & most of all, Head of Mojo!) at Atkinsons Coffee in Lancashire.

“When we took over this respected old 5th Generation Company 12 years ago we felt a certain weight of responsibility to nurture this much loved local institution back to full health. We never imagined how much growth we would go on to experience. From two part-time staff to 40 on the payroll. From operating a wholesale & retail business in the cramped footprint of the original shop to spreading out first into Sun Square and our first café The Music Room then to renovate and the building next door to us and return it to a vibrant public space and multi-tasking building that houses, not just a café but a bakery, offices, warehousing, training room, etc.

Our latest big project was to transform the dreary, dead space between the Shop and the Hall, from a dark alleyway and derelict back yard into a light, airy, productive, state-of-the-art Coffee Roastery. This now houses the original 1930’s Whitmee steam-punk gothic roasters alongside and in stark contrast to the gleaming stainless steel revolutionary new Loring roaster from Silicone Valley. This machine, that meets all the stringent Californian emission laws, sits under a living roof making not only the most high-tech roastery in the Region but also the greenest!”
