The Q1 Trend Talk brought us to Birmingham, where PlaceTech welcomed around 100 property and tech professionals from the all over the UK to explore the latest trends and issues within proptech.

Sheraz Dar, CEO of rent reporting service CreditLadder, talked about the importance of using rent, which for most is their biggest outgoing, to build a credit score, and announced the company’s intentions to partner with one of the UK’s biggest lenders to help users of CreditLadder to get mortgages. Nigel Atkinson, chief operating officer of internet connectivity solution Node, shared that 90% of building stock was built pre-internet, and therefore the infrastructure of many buildings are insufficient, and how Node can change that. Watch Nigel Atkinson’s presentation

Jill Guthrie, digital manager at construction firm Willmott Dixon, shared how the company is beginning to digitise the industry, the problems that they’re facing, and how there needs to be a shift in people’s mind-sets to move construction forward. Watch Jill Guthrie’s presentation

Graeme Scott, director and UK sector lead of intelligence at IBI, explored the future of transport, what the cities of tomorrow will look like and the challenges that transport infrastructure faces. Watch Graeme Scott’s presentation

Jonathan Carthy, head of IT at Glenn Howells Architects, explained how the firm is using tech to ensure that the architects have enough time to do what they’re paid for, designing. He added that architects in the future are going to look nothing like what they have in the past and are going to be like filmmakers. Watch Jonathan Carthy’s presentation

Panels

Nigel Atkinson of Node, Sheraz Dar of CreditLadder, Tom McClellan of WiredScore, Grace Manning-Marsh of LandEnhance and Ken Norton of LandInsight joined a panel to discuss if we already have all the proptech we need, how the perception across the table with real estate clients is changing, and how the proptech companies turn excitement into business reality.

For the second panel, Jill Guthrie of Willmott Dixon, Graeme Scott of IBI, Jonathan Carthy of Glenn Howells Architects, Kathryn Malloch of Hammerson and Robbie Turner of Mills & Reeve, discussed how much they’re spending on tech, whether the line between B2B and B2C is blurring, and results of ongoing trials in the companies.
